LO1: Analysis of radio program

The radio programme i have chosen to analyse is the 6am radio show with Jonita Muisi, this radio show covers a large range of topics including: news, travel, weather, sport and a variety of music and subsequently appeals to a wider audience. However, it is likely that this show will better appeal to an older age bracket due to the content of the news segments and choice of music. In addition to this the show is broad casted at 6.00AM meaning the likely listeners would be those commuting to work and breakfast listeners.

Purpose
The purpose of this programme is to inform, educate and entertain. The topical news elements within the breakfast show educate the listeners on the current happenings and key news. In addition to this the updates from weather to travel inform the reader also, for example this episode of the breakfast show informed the listeners of important weather warnings from the met office. Between these elements the audience is entertained and kept engaged by the use of a varied selection of songs and jingles

Income
Unlike most conventional radio stations the BBC show does not rely on methods such as advertisements and sponsorships. This is largely as a result of the BBC being a public service broadcaster, meaning that it has a duty to provide content that informs, educates or entertains. Subsequently, this is funded by the government and ultimately the audiences through the revenue made from tv licences, this allows for the show not to be dependant on frequent adverts and sponsorship.

Scheduling
This radio show is broadcasted daily, starting at 6.00 AM. This breakfast show aims to target those on the commute to work and such circumstances, therefore this likely appeals to a more working class audience.

Content
Due to the BBC's obligation to provide content which is informative, educational and entertaining, the radio show consits of a large and diverse variety of content. As previously mentioned, the breakfast show features segments on news, travel, weather, sport and music. Commonly, the music used in the show varies in genre and style, from contemporary music to retro throwbacks, this is used to appeal to a larger audience of listeners and maximise the listenership and appeal. Similarly, this is the case for involving a variety of topics in the news segments. For example the show listened too had a short news segment on student finance and changes to be made to such subject. Subsequently, this would appeal to those who it affects and a majority younger audience. Where as within the three hour slot there are also features on pensions and topical news which likely better appeals to a older, more mature audience. Furthermore, in this radio show they're frequently seen too feature phone ins to support the topics in which they debate. This often involves the voice of an expert opinion to reinforce the topic and provide insightful, reliable and trust worthy information of a subject. In addition to this, it is also common for the radio show to make use of audience participation with listeners ringing in to give news or personal experiences. This often engages the audience as it is relatable to their lives and makes them feel involved with the show.

Staff and Resource
Evidently, the main personnel in this show/ station is the host, Jonita Muita. Alongside Jonita will be a team of personnel which allow the show to operate smoothly. For example this involves the station manager, traffic manager, radio journalists, broadcast assistants, agents and producers. In addition to this large and varied team, they are also heavily reliant on the resources to produce the show. This includes a; mixing console, to manage all the mic inputs and audio. An array of microphones, to record the presenters and guests. Shock mounts and boom arm for microphones, to adjust high and direction of microphones. Microphone processor, cleans up the signal from the mic. Headphones to allow for those in the studio to listen back to the show and finally computers in order to run the show. All this in additon to several other smaller components are needed in order to produce a high quality live radio show.
