Radio is distributed in several ways across the UK. For example it can be accessed through FM and AM, but also through DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting), DTR (Digital television radio) and through live streaming on the internet.
One such example would be BBC radio Sheffield. This station broadcasts on 88.6, 94.7, 104.1 Fm and 1035 AM. These variety of channels available are as a result of several transmitters placed around the region and allow the radio station to reach South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire. This includes the city of Sheffield, plus Rotherham, Doncaster, Barnsley, Chesterfield and surrounding areas. To reach further areas and allow the radio to be distributed via television radio, larger transmitters such as Emley moor transmitter are used to broadcast the signal. This signal can then be picked up and relayed by other transmitters to further the reach. This is similar with larger commercial radios which have a wider reach than the smaller more regional base Sheffield radio.
Furthermore, radio can be distributed via online streaming. Unlike traditional radio transmitting this does not require a signal, therefore meaning the content can be accessed anywhere with an internet connection. The ability for radio to be streamed means it can be accessed in any place at any time making it more convenient, with some stations such as the ones part of the BBC providing the ability to go back and listen to previous radio shows that have already aired. Due to technological convergence and the development of black box devices it now means persons can access and stream the radio from their smartphone device and are no longer restricted by the problems of weak radio signal or the large and un portable radio recievers, overall making radio more accseble.
